The Cryo Killer A Thrilling Sci-fi Short eBook Jason Werbeloff Reviews

In a near future, if you die of natural/accidental causes and have money for the service, you'll be frozen to a cryogenic state until technology evolves enough to thaw you back to life in perfect condition again. But the Cryo Bureau forbids this process in case of suicide and that's where the "killer" expert gets in to assure a "natural" death for his customers.

Well thought and well written short story that kept me interested till the unpredicted ending.
Another fantastic short story by Jason Werbeloff! His writing is so much fun to read, I find myself really absorbing and relishing in every sentence. This time, he takes the reader on a slightly mind-bending journey into the mind of a cryogenic killer for hire. The atmosphere is futuristic, yet retro/noir at the same time, almost feeling like an old private eye story in spots, and as always with Werbeloff's writing, the imagery is rich and vivid. I enjoyed the character development, and I thought that the ending was perfect, and unexpected. I look forward to my next read from this extremely talented author!
If you had a terminal illness and the funds, would you want to die now and have yourself frozen until a cure was discovered? What if your illness would allow you to live 3 or 4 more years in pain with no relief except death in site? Suppose it was (and is) illegal to have help killing yourself, and there was an agency that would do it for a fee. What would you do????
Synopsis
A husband and wife employ the services of a man who fronts as an insurance salesman, but also works as a contract killer. However, his clients don’t want someone else hit, they want themselves done. His clients are owners of cryo stasis contracts and so long as their deaths are ruled other than suicide or assisted suicide, they’ll wake up in twenty years. After the doctors have created the promised drugs to fix any illness and keep you the same age forever.
One morning, a husband and wife come in, referred by a previous client. Our MC feels some familiarity with the wife and in the pursuit of doing his job, he becomes obsessed with her.
The Good
This is a very quick read and pulls you in fast. The story is laid out well and very compelling, as is our MC.
The Bad
The author doesn’t seem to care for compound sentences. This creates sort of stunted flow for the reader. Because this is a short story, it’s digestible. I don’t think I could handle anything like a novelette or novella written like this, much less a novel.
Another thing I didn’t particularly care for was that on the morning before the job, our MC wakes up with a powerful headache and I immediately figured out the remainder of the story.
The Ugly
There is no ugliness here
In this fascinating story, various details seem rather ordinary. Yet there are also some facts which could only happen in a science fiction book. I was immediately pulled into the premise, where a person deliberately kills people so that they can undergo Cryopreservation. Hopefully, they will wake up years later but still be the same age and can be healed of any ailments. What ultimately occurs in this short story is believably unsettling.

When a client comes into Life Extensions Ltd and speaks with Barker using a specially coded phrase, he knows the individual desires to be killed in order for the Cryo Bureau to freeze them. His latest customer is a couple, but he knows exactly what needs to be done so their wish comes true.

There are definitely several surprises in THE CRYO KILLER, and I felt a chill thinking about the probability of this happening in the future. Jason Werbeloff certainly has a very vivid imagination, and I thought his story came across as conceivable with lots of inventive aspects.
The Cryo Killer is a short story by Jason Werbeloff. Only 20 pages, it was for sale on for USD 0.00, my absolute favorite price. For this unbelievable price, you get an almost unbelievable story. Those with failing health will be able to contract for their own early death to come back to life one day when a cure for their diseases will be available. Their age at moment of temporary, early death will be the age at which subscribers awake thanks to cryogenics.

Barker is one of the Cryo Killer’s, or a life assurance agent, names might differ. There is a need for someone to administer the present-day death so the Cryo process could begin. That’s Barker's job. Killings are not legal. The deaths cannot be under suspicious circumstances or the bodies won’t be released to Cryo on time for the process to be administered. And the deaths cannot be ruled suicide. Out of over six hundred operations performed by Barker, he had lost only seven to verdicts of suicide.

Clients can choose how, but not when, they will die. Poisoning by lethal injection is popular. Gassing is a close second. The job Barker is working on presently involves young wife Inesa and older husband Paul. They have ordered a double killing, so they might wake up in the future next to each other. Very romantic. But there is a problem. Barker falls for Inesa.

If Barker can kill Paul, not temporarily but permanently, and dispose of the body, Barker would be free to plan his future with Inesa. His friend would supply a false ID to Barker so that when a planned double killing terminated Inesa and Barker (now Paul) the “revised” couple would be turned over to the Cryo Bureau. Barker and Inesa would wake up to a happier life in the future. Barker would explain to Inesa later. The plan could succeed. Barker had such a long record of proven success.

Did it succeed? Read this short story for the “nice” surprise ending. At only twenty pages and a price of free, how can you lose?
